Ruby on Rails Developer – Biodiversity Systems

Ruby on Rails Engineer – Biodiversity / Conservation

Location: Hybrid, Cambridge 2 days per week (ideally, maybe more flexibility)

Salary: £50K – £62K + 12% pension, life insurance and more.

VISA SPONSORSHIP AVAILABLE FOR RELOCATION

Are you someone who loves our planet and wants to do good in a role with a biodiversity-focused global organisation?

Would you like to do more with your technical skills? Are you somebody who’s dreamed of working to support and connect people and systems for the benefit of species conservation? Read on.

Thankfully, as you read this there are organisations already working on deeply detailed and technical systems aimed at recovering and regenerating ecosystems. These are essential in promoting collaboration and preventing biodiversity loss or limiting loss in scenarios where it is unavoidable.

These systems range from databases on endangered species and key biodiversity areas to things like tracking pollution, monitoring species and the recovery of regions or sites. They are integrated into companies, governments and organisations all over the world and help all to understand how ecosystems interact and influence one another and how we, as humans, can protect them.

A passion for nature or the environment more broadly will serve you well here, as a conservation org. they are hyper-focused on impact and making their work accessible, integrating partners and customers into their platform to expand who is making use of this data for decision-making.

The CIO here has real ambitions to see the tech evolve across this 2,000+ people org with ~10 regional offices and teams spread more broadly than that across biodiversity hotspots (physical & political). That includes hardware, software, data science, and the whole shebang.

So what will you be doing specifically?

Building and maintaining the tech foundation that underpins a key database and platform. This will include investigating issues and implementing fixes to build in resilience and remove points of failure. You’ll also bring documentation up to standard; much was completed by consultants and wasn’t always updated by internal members of the team so there is some work to do in enabling the evolution of this platform and this may include switching to Python and Django or other technologies in the longer-term – 2+ years.

The skills priorities are Ruby on Rails and exp building APIs, exp with geospatial data and GIS tools is highly desirable. The role will be 80:20 backend : frontend, with some infrastructure and security tasks in there.

There are a number of partners who collaborate on various other interlinked tools, so cross-team collaboration exp will be beneficial. If you’ve touched on security or some DevOps tools and cloud technologies, but not extensively, there is support to grow your knowledge – in the form of partners/teammates and funding for courses, textbooks or other materials if needed.

It’s a small team of ~5, including the systems manager, that is part of a broader conservation tech ecosystem of 5-6 other teams and systems that occasionally collaborate or share resources, including with some of those partner orgs.

You’ll be involved with the design, review code and work closely with, scientists, ecologists, and climate researchers, prioritise work and engage some stakeholders or 3rd parties, also some internal teams such as GIS and data analysts and program managers to support them in delivering projects across various tiers of the conservation sector.

Interested in addressing biodiversity loss and turning things around? Do say hello!  🙂

GreenTech Data Scientist – Conservation

Conservation Data Scientist

Location: Fully remote within Europe, +/- 2 hours of CET.

Salary: €70K – €80K + 13% vacation supplement + equity & benefits.

Forest management can be challenging. Cut too much and you’re causing unnecessary damage, too little and the risk of wildfire or damage to infrastructure can be devastating and costly.

Vegetation management may not sound all that exciting but building earth observation software to integrate satellite imagery and Machine Learning with data coming in from teams, remote sensors and other hardware on the ground presents interesting challenges!

These systems are used to efficiently manage resources and team activities, saving time and money.

Most importantly though, this saves homes, businesses and services from blackouts caused by seasonal and extreme weather events. It’s a game changer in energy and climate resilience.

The company have grown rapidly since the end of 2021. There are ~50 people now, with around 20 of those in development and data science.

The data science team are growing to increase the capacity of their systems for their existing clients, and to meet demand as new clients with ever-more-interesting requirements come online. They need someone to support their efforts to utilise satellite imagery and other geographical datasets and analyse those using machine learning, delivering the end results to customers.

You’ll work with the software engineering teams to improve and create products and tools, refine and build data models and look at optimising data pipelines, nudging their systems onto the next stage of evolution.

Predominantly they use Python, but they also work quite heavily with GIS technologies and tools. They also use PyTorch and Tensorflow, so experience with similar frameworks or libraries will be transferrable, especially if you’ve worked with geospatial and satellite data. They’re not too picky about whether you’ve worked with R, MATLAB or others, so long as are familiar with Python and can complete a 4-hour take-home task using it.

There will be some projects you manage independently, and others where you collaborate with the broader team, including customer success.

If alongside being a data scientist you’re deeply curious about climate change, nature and biodiversity, this is a great opportunity to explore those passions and contribute to interesting products with tangible impacts, please do apply.

The team are friendly and passionate, and the company are supportive with good benefits including equity, so you’ve bought into any future success.

What are you waiting for? ?

Hardware Tester

Role: Hardware Tester

Location: Nottingham

Salary: Up to 45k, hybrid working 2 days a week in the office

Is your passion within hardware testing? Would you love the opportunity to start a test team from scratch? If so read on as this may be the role for you!

You will be working within a small organisation, who are looking for its first tester to join the business. As a business they are going from strength to strength, winning numerous awards year-on-year and partnering with some pretty cool companies.

As I mentioned, hardware testing will be your forte but you may have a varied hardware and software testing background. As this is a brand new role, you will be able to take the opportunity to discuss with the developers how testing has previously been done within the business. You will be able to take this knowledge and develop the best practices and procedures that need to be put into place for the test function.

When you first join, all testing will be done on a manual basis, however, this doesn’t have to be the case forever.  They are happy to listen to your advice with regard to potential automation in the test team and as the business grows there is the option to grow a team around you. However, if team leadership isn’t your bag it’s not an issue.

The role would involve working in the office twice a week.  This is down to the products that you will be testing and how they value in-person collaboration as a business.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, drop me a line and I can tell you more.  ✊
